How to Set Learning Goals with Your Child’s Tutor

In Ghana, many parents are now hiring tutors to help their children do better in school. Whether your child is in a public or private school, or learning under the GES or Cambridge system, tutoring can help improve their performance. But to get the best out of tuition, it’s important to set learning goals with the tutor. These goals help you, your child, and the tutor to focus and see progress clearly.

Things to consider when setting learning Goals with your child's Home Tutor.

1. Understand What Your Child Needs Help With

The first step is to look at where your child is struggling. Some children find it hard to read, others don’t understand Maths or Science. Sometimes, the teacher at school might tell you during Parent-Teacher meetings, or you’ll notice from test results or homework. When you know where the problem is, you and the tutor can focus on that area. For example, if your child finds it hard to solve word problems in Maths, then that becomes the main focus for the first few lessons.

2. Set Short-Term and Long-Term Learning Goals

Once the main challenge is clear, the next thing is to set goals. A short-term goal can be something small that the child can achieve in two to four weeks, like learning how to write a good composition. A long-term goal could be something bigger, like preparing for the BECE or improving exam scores by the end of the term. These goals help everyone to stay focused and measure improvement over time. Without goals, tuition can feel like it’s going in circles.

3. Be Clear and Realistic

When you’re setting goals, it’s good to be very clear and simple. Saying “I want my child to improve” is not enough. It’s better to say something like, “By the end of this month, I want my child to be able to solve basic algebra.” Also, the goals must match the child’s current level. Don’t expect them to jump from 40% to 90% in one month. Talk to the tutor about what’s possible and work step by step. Small wins lead to big results.

4. Monitor the Progress Together

Don’t wait until the end of the term before checking how your child is doing. It’s good to ask the tutor every one or two weeks how things are going. You can also look at your child’s notes or ask them what they’ve learned. Some tutors may send you voice notes or messages after lessons. These updates help you know if the learning goals are being met or need to change.

5. Encourage and Adjust When Needed

When your child meets a goal, even a small one, be proud of them. Clap for them, say “well done,” or give them a small reward like a treat or favourite food. It makes them feel confident and happy to learn more. And if the goal is too hard or too easy, don’t be afraid to change it. What matters most is that your child is learning, and you are all working together.
